boo-hoo, virgil does'nt like his drums anymore. gee what a drag. what is he to do? endorsements only magnify advertisment power. hey i like looking @ ads with name drummers extoling the virtues of the product. they are funny. we have been all influenced by these types of ads, especially(i am hypothesizing) when we were young. the response to this subject is hilarious! (uncle tom, where's one). really who gives a fuck about virgil. he is on his own path (and a damn fine hard working one). i love solo-type drumming displays, but virgil leaves me cold-musically speaking-, but thrills me and inspires me also. virgil by design has painted himself into a corner with his path on the drums. in fact it would be mind blowingly shocking if i heard him play a straight groove (ala questlove? or steve ferrone). that would be innovation. sorry about the virgil rant. "You know who likes drum solos? Drummers. You know who hires us? Musicians!"--Ignacio Berroa / much love...........beats

Yeah, I'm really starting to be of the mindset that 99 percent of the market is bullshit. I was hanging out with my girlfriend in Guitar Center the other day and she saw some weird carbon fiber kit for, like, $7000. She asked me if I would ever buy it if I had the money, and I said hell no. Waste of money.
I think a lot of the "innovations" in "drum technology" are useless. Drums can only sound so good, and if they're mic'ed you're going to use some effects on them, anyway. I used to have this tiny old generic kit that sounded unbelievably good on tape, and it was worthless in today's market--I traded it in for a cymbal. My old friend had some Yamaha recording customs (bought 'cause Weckl used them), and they sounded like shit because he always had them tuned too high. Buddy's drums sounded great, but they weren't mounted with Rims, made out of weird-ass material, etc. I think a good drummer MAKES the kit sound good.
Ditto with really expensive snare drums. A friend of mine had a birds-eye maple snare that cost something like $3000. What an idiot.

Of course, if you give Ronn Dunnett $1,000 for a snare drum, you'll probably get every penny's worth!

Who's Ron Dunnett? While we're on the subject, where can you get a good, used, relatively inexpensive snare drum?
